Use Animal Medicines Responsibly

One of NOAH’s key roles is in supporting the responsible use of animal medicines, and on this page we provide links to useful information for producers, prescribers and users of animal medicines.

Responsible promotion of animal medicines is the first link in the chain towards responsible use. The NOAH Code of Practice for the Promotion of Animal Medicines outlines how animal medicines companies that produce medicines can do this for benefit of their customers and the health and welfare of animals.

In 2009, the phrase “use medicines responsibly” was introduced as a voluntary strapline for members to use in promotional materials. Since 1st July 2011the strapline has been adopted as a formal part of the NOAH code.

The code also requires that promotions to people other than prescribers should also contain a reminder to consult their veterinary surgeon. Advertising text should always state clearly the name of the company and the brand being promoted, and promotion must not be designed to disguise its real purpose.

The next link in the chain are the prescribers of animal medicines so we have provided a list of links for them, with information from the NOAH Compendium, RUMA, the VMD and the BVA covering the responsible prescription of antimicrobials, vaccines and antiparasitics, and the correct use of the cascade.

The final link in the chain is the end user, the farmers and pet owners who have responsibility for the animals in their care. For this group we have provided a comprehensive list of links from NOAH, the VMD, RUMA and the BVA. There are also links to information pages about storage and disposal, and to the main sites of relevant organisations.

Appropriate medicine promotion, prescription and use will, on occasion, change and develop. NOAH will keep the information provided on this page up to date and continually under review. (We cannot, however, take responsibility for updates to the websites of partner organisations.)

Sustainable control of worms in cattle (COWS)
Internal parasites represent an important threat to optimising performance in both beef and dairy cattle. Feed conversion efficiency, growth rates and fertility will all be affected if cattle are carrying large burdens of internal parasites.

There is an industry initiative  which aims to improve the information available to vets and advisors about the sustainable control of endoparasites in cattle. EBLEX and DairyCo have funded the compilation of a technical manual covering parasite lifecycles, diseases caused and best practice recommendations for use of anthelmintics in cattle. The technical manual will be complemented in the future by additional farmer-targeted information and events emphasizing:
- Target worm species and stage of the life cycle
- Preferred method of administration and persistence of the product
- Withdrawal periods
- Dosing intervals
- Cost for a whole seasons treatment
- What parasite treatments has the animal had in the past?
