NOAH launches Veterinary Resource Centre as part of Animal Medicines Best Practice Programme

NOAH is today launching the next phase of its Animal Medicines Best Practice (AMBP) Programme at the BCVA Congress 2018. The programme can now provide vets with resources to work with their farmer clients to support the responsible use of antibiotics across UK farms. This follows the successful introduction of the programme’s farmer eLearning portal for dairy, beef, sheep and pig producers, launched at the House of Lords in July this year.

The AMBP Programme now gives vets access to new resources, such as presentations and workbooks, enabling them to deliver face-to-face training to their clients. This facilitates a coordinated and consistent approach in the responsible use of antibiotics. Vets can offer farmers a signed Certificate of Training that can be used as a record for Red Tractor assessment.

The development of the AMBP Programme has been led by NOAH in partnership with a working group of stakeholders from across the industry including vets, farmers, the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA), the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and leading academics, to create a robust and trusted training programme for all those working in the sheep, dairy, beef and pig sectors.

The programme is raising awareness, knowledge and understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and help drive best practice in a consistent manner across the industry in the UK when it comes to using antibiotics.

There is a clear demand from the food supply chain for appropriate training, and the programme provides materials that will satisfy both supply chain and farm assurance requirements, such as the Red Tractor recommendations.

Training modules are available for vets to access via the NOAH website or directly through an online Lantra eLearning platform www.elearning.lantra.co.uk

NOAH Chair, Gaynor Hillier, comments:

“The successful launch of the farmer training programme earlier in the Summer has already shown how valuable this type of resource can be, and we are delighted to be able to lead the way in making it available. The new veterinary training materials will enable vets to work with their clients and help foster a coordinated and consistent approach across the industry. This collaborative, cross-sector strategy on training will support both farmers and vets, demonstrating that our farmers have the skills to use antibiotics responsibly, providing reassurance to consumers and policy makers. NOAH is happy to be building on existing antibiotic stewardship achievements within the farming sector as ensuring best practice is vital to safeguard the future efficacy of antibiotics for us all.”

Professor the Lord Trees, who hosted the launch of the AMBP Programme at the House of Lords, comments:

“As the only veterinary surgeon in the House of Lords I recognise the need for the AMBP programme and fully support it. The collaborative and coordinated way it has been developed has created a vital set of trusted and thorough resources for vets and farmers alike.”

Professor Peter Borriello, Chief Executive of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) comments:

“We all need to continue to work together to ensure antibiotics remain effective for the future. This will be helped by raising awareness through the new AMBP Programme – it is down to all of us to help promote participation in this course and encourage best practice on our farms.”
