Pharmacovigilance
Veterinary pharmacovigilance is the ongoing process of monitoring and ensuring the safety of veterinary medicines after they are approved for use. Overseen by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), this system relies on veterinary professionals, animal owners and pharmaceutical companies to report any suspected side effects, lack of effectiveness or unexpected reactions linked to animal medicines.
Reports are carefully assessed to identify and respond to potential risks, and the VMD takes regulatory action when necessary, such as updating warning or, in rare cases, withdrawing the product from the market. Participation in pharmacovigilance helps protect animal welfare, public health and the environment. By reporting concerns, everyone involved contributes to the safe and responsible use of veterinary medicines in the UK.
